Navel lint is the only lint the human body pre-processes. Over the course of a day, the navel gathers fiber, softens it, and packs it to a density and loft that dryer manufacturers have spent decades failing to reproduce. It arrives pre-felted, pre-conditioned, and in tufts of exactly the size a songbird can work with. Dryer lint, by contrast, is a compressed mat full of synthetic fragments and despair, and it wicks moisture toward the chick, not away.

We understand the hesitation, so we will explain it again, and we are happy to. The navel is a natural carding chamber. Body warmth and gentle daily motion align the fibers, remove brittle fragments, and blend cotton with trace wool into an insulating medium of remarkable consistency. A songbird cannot tell you this, but a songbird can show you: offered a choice of materials in our 2022 preference trials, 34 of 40 birds chose the navel lint. The other six were starlings, and starlings choose chaos.

By the time lint reaches a nest, it is cleaner than most things a bird will stand on that day. Every donation passes through our triple-wash sanitation cycle, a UV cabinet, and the inspection of a volunteer named Sandra who has rejected donations for less. About 0.4 grams insulates one warbler for one winter. A committed daily collector produces one to three grams a year. This means you, personally, are a two-to-seven warbler operation. Very few people can say that about themselves, and all of them are our donors.

Yes. Lint production is a gift unevenly distributed, and we do not judge. You can give monthly, volunteer at a sorting table, or simply switch to fleece and see what happens. Many of our finest donors started with nothing.

No. The warbler will not know its own name either. The certificate is for you. The warmth is for the warbler. We find this arrangement works well for both parties.

Monetary donations are tax deductible to the full extent allowed by law. In-kind lint donations are valued by the IRS at zero dollars, a figure we dispute annually in a letter they have never answered.
