Worn Live, or Worn as Leather
Our fashion department does two things. It fits live worms to be worn as scarves, belts, lanyards, and hat bands, and it tans the hides of our meat and leather worms into goods that last for decades. Both sides of the department share a room in Barn 2, which we have been told is unusual.
Live wearables
Every live wearable is a healthy adult worm, fitted at the farm with a cotton or moss liner so the worm stays damp and the clothing stays dry. A worm can be worn comfortably for four to six hours. After that it needs to go back to its soil bed, which ships free with every live wearable.
The nightly rule: return your worm to its soil bed every night. A worm that is worn every day and rested every night will stay in good condition for several years.
Worm leather
Our leather comes from worms raised on the farm for the Butcher Counter and from the Mink Worm line, which we raise for its hide. Hides are vegetable tanned in Tillford and cut and sewn by a small team that includes a former saddle maker from Sheridan, Wyoming.
Worm leather has a fine ring texture that runs across the grain. It is soft, surprisingly strong, and takes a high polish. The natural pattern of each species carries through tanning, so no two pieces match exactly.
